Heck yeah I’m so excited for this week’s challenge because I (thought) have plenty of mountain pictures. Which apparently NOT. *sigh* Well anyway, here’s a photo of mine in front of Krakatoa or Krakatau, a volcanic island made of lava in the Sunda Strait between the islands of Java and Sumatra in my beloved country, Indonesia. Actually I was standing in front of “Anak Krakatau”. Eruptions at the volcano since 1927 have built a new island in the same location, named Anak Krakatau (which is Indonesian for “Child of Krakatoa”).
Krakatoa Trivia:
- The island exploded in 27th of August 1883, killing approximately 40,000 people, although some estimates put the death toll much higher.
- From a report, the explosion was being heard nearly 3,000 miles (4,800 km) from its point of origin.
- Was the eruption of Krakatoa the most explosive one in history? No. Mount Toba which erupted approximately 74,000 years ago has been recognised as being the most explosive eruption of all time. Krakatoa is actually the fifth biggest explosion.
- Contrary to the 1969 film “Krakatoa – East of Java”, Krakatoa was in fact, WEST of Java.
